Born in Germany in 1896, he studied at the University of Danzig and later taught
there in the School of Architecture. He arrived in Canada in 1928 and worked as a
house painter, while designing and painting stage sets and murals for local firms.
He held his first one man show of 150 paintings at the Winnipeg School of Art
before arriving in Montreal in 1934. He became very involved in teaching art to
children who were sick or underpriviledged and could not afford to take art lessons, which
remained his life's passion. His first influences were the German Expressionists and then
the abstract and semi-abstract movement. He worked in oil, water colours and linolium,
which he carved and painted. He did many large size commisioned works across Canada, and
his paintings can be found in most Canadian Museums and Corporate collections.
