Born in France in 1865, he watched Corot paint as a boy and was forever influenced by
him. He studied art in Paris and Antwerp, and loved the French Impressionists. He
came to Canada in 1884 and became art director for a Canadian publishing firm until he
fell ill. He married in Brantford, Ontario. He travelled with his wife to
Belgium in 1904 to study and paint. He returned to Canada and became Principal of
the Victoria School of Art and Design, in Halifax. He was later a founding member of
the Arts and Letters Club, Toronto. He is represented in the National Gallery of
Canada and other museums. He died in 1944.
