Herman Heimlich was born in Hungary in 1904. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest. He moved to Montreal in 1930 where he established a School of Fine Arts, and later taught for many years at the Saidye Bronfman Center. He was a prolific artist comfortable both drawing and painting landscapes, portraits and still-life's. His work was quick and spontaneous, the influence of Matisse and Cezanne obvious. He participated in more than eighty shows throughout his lifetime, twelve of them solos. Six years after his death in 1986 the Joliette Museum of Fine Arts held a retrospective of his works on paper. The paintings of Herman Heimlich can be found in the collections of most Canadian museums.
