Born in Montreal in 1917, he was largely self taught, but studied at l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts for three years before rebelling against their "very academic teaching". The tree has been an important subject matter for him, and although largely a landscape painter, he seldom painted on the spot. He has been known to spend from six months to a year on one canvas, working on the painting in the morning and teaching art in the afternoon. His works can be seen at The Montreal Museum of Fine Art, The National Gallery, The Musee du Quebec, The Art Gallery of Ontario, The Lord Beaverbrook Art Gallery and several other prestigious museums across the country. De Tonnancour died in Montreal in 2005.
