Born in Montreal in 1924, Sylvia Lefkovitz studied at the Montreal School of Fine Arts, Columbia University in New York, and finally at the Julian Academy in Paris. A grant from the Canada Council for the Arts in 1955 allowed her to finish her studies in Mexico. In 1960 she travelled to Italy to learn the art of "lost wax" sculpture. Until 1981 she received numerous orders from the private and public sectors in Italy and Canada for her bronze sculptures and her paintings. Back in Montreal after a twenty year absence she resumed her ties with Gallery L'Art Francais where she showed her work until 1987, the year of her death.
