QUINZE

(Click on the work to enlarge it)

Born in Sherbrooke, Quebec, in 1950, Quinze has lived in Gaspé, Quebec since 1973. Self-taught, Quinze started sculpting in 1999. He assumed the first name Artien in 2010.

Quinze is a multi-faceted artist, known for works involving the cleverly organized vignettes containing many objects and references. In his work, folk, naïve and contemporary art intersect. His “sketches” are fanciful and theatrical in nature – they are full of amusing and elements to discover and humorous and unsettling surprises.

In his work, Quinze makes reference to all manner of famous figures and iconic pieces drawn from the history of art. In doing so he offhandedly “hijacks” their significance in order to enrich his sculptural language and give it new meaning.

In 2003, Artien Quinze received the Top Artist Profile Award at the 20e Anniversary edition of New York’s Manhattan Arts International Competition.

He has been represented by Galerie Valentin since July 2011.
