Biography of Alexandr KACHKIN

BIOGRAPHY

Born in Kiev, Ukraine, in 1955, in 1980 Alexandr Kachkin graduated from the Kiev Art Institute. He now resides in Toronto. Since 1997, he is represented by Galerie Valentin.

SUBJECT/ THEMES

Kachkin’s paintings contain a fascinating combination of fantasy, harsh reality and mysterious warmth. Card players, musicians, clowns and puppeteers, their dreams of happiness give them a youthful allure, even if their memories may be sad.

Bathed in warm mysterious light the people are happy to be alive even if their existence may seem difficult.

The curator of the New-Shag Gallery in Kiev says “his paintings are the fantasy of reality, or reality of fantasy”.

TECHNIQUE / MEDIUM

Alexandr Kachkin paints in oil on canvas. His work is reminiscent of the Renaissance paintings but with a twist. He plays with colour and light, purple red and golden yellow, with thick depths of blue and impenetrable backgrounds.
