Born in Hull, Quebec in 1916, Dallaire studied art at the technical school in Hull and
later at the Toronto technical school. He also studied in Boston and painted
religious murals for the Dominican Fathers. He won a province of Quebec prize to
study in France and was imprisoned by the Germans during the war but continued to
paint during his confinement. He returned to Canada in 1946 and took a job teaching
tapestry at Ecole des Beaux Arts. He worked for the NFB on film strips and also had
a studio in Ottawa where he created large canvases using painstaking methods to ensure
their durability. His fantastical paintings were often bordering on comedic, but
possessed a meloncholic edge. Jean Dallaire died in Vence, France in 1965. His works
can be found in every major Canadian museum.
