Jean Soucy

Painter and teacher, Jean Soucy was director of the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec from 1967 to 1973. Following his graduation from the École des beaux-arts de Québec in 1938, where he studied with Lucien Martial and Jean-Paul Lemieux among others, he obtained a teaching diploma as a professor of Fine art.
From 1939 until 1946, he taught at the École normale Laval, Québec and in 1945 received the Prix de peinture de la province for a large modernist figurative work.
A provincial grant in 1946 enabled him to spend the following four years in Paris where he studied with André Planson at the Académie Julian, with Jean Cassou at the École du Louvre, and in the open studio of the Grande-Chaumière. During this Parisian srjourn, he exhibited in several group exhibitions.
Returning to Québec in 1950, he worked as a professor at the École des beaux-arts de Québec until 1967 and continued to paint in his spare time. He also organized and took part in many exhibitions, notably those of the Société des Arts plastiques de la Province. In 1963, Soucy was named Officier de l'Ordre du Mérite Scolaire and, in 1966, his painting was featured in the first exhibition honouring local artists at the Musée du Québec.
Writing in Le Droit in 1967, Denise Coté noted that his best pictures were dominated by both a surreal and abstract atmosphere, and integrated a vibrant and lyrical sense of colour.
