Biography of Phyllis MENDELL

Born in Montreal, Phyllis Mendell is a member of the Sculptor’s Society of Canada. She attended both McGill and Concordia Universities in Montreal and studied the “lost wax” method with Sylvia Lefkovitz from 1984 to 1986. She also took painting courses, drawing and sculpture at the Saidye Bronfman Center from 1984 to 1988, under the direction of Sylvia Lefkovitz, Vincent de Vincenco and Roslyn Swartzman.

Mendell's style is as diverse as the treatment of her subjects. Themes range from musicians to lifelike character studies to abstract lovers. Highly stylized forms stand in contrast to realistic portrayals. Her work is characterized by clean sleek lines and strong contours, her approach compassionate and sensitive, and her sculpture, contemplative and serene.
