Montréal, Québec 1923 - 2002

Born in Montreal in 1923, Jean-Paul Riopelle began taking private art classes at the age of six.  At 17 he was painting abstracts along with more classical works.   He attended Ecole des Beaux Arts de Montreal from 1942 to 1945 and was greatly influenced by the work of Van Gogh.  He also studied under Borduas and signed the Refus Global in 1948 with the other Automatistes.

Riopelle made several trips to Paris and decided to live and work there, and his international reputation grew quickly. Some of his most stunning paintings were done in the mid fifties.  He worked in water colours, ink, (sometimes at the same time), and used a palette knife to create the mosaic effect in his highly textured oil paintings.

Canada's most famous artist died in March, 2002.   His work can be seen in every major museum in Canada and around the world.
