The Children in Nature Series
from April 13, 2013 to April 27, 2013

The theme of this series of paintings was motivated by the beauty of Nature. An earlier series, The Children's Toy Series, featured antique children's toys. The decision to include children at play in nature was a logical evolution, culminating in the Children in Nature Series. The paintings express the wonders discovered through observating the natural world and are inspired by childhood memories. Paintings are often dominated by a central image and corners are generally inconsequential. By choosing to paint within circles and ovals, and eliminating corners, I was both challenged and intrigued by composition restraints. The circle and oval are fundamental shapes, universal symbols, representing wholeness, and central to both the spiritual and material world. They are symbols, and for me, perfect shapes, reminiscent of infinity – no beginning and no end. Sidney Menkes

Beyond Words
from March 16, 2013 to March 30, 2013

Beyond Words. The ineffable. Which is hard to say, which resists expression. Which is beyond words, and maybe beyond conscience. I paint because words elude me, or because few of them seem adequate. The right words don’t come to me easily, especially when it comes to what’s innermost. Yet there is one language that seems to suit me: the language of colour. To me, colours seem to have a way of their own and to organize themselves. Joyfully, frenetically. Sometimes because of me, sometimes in spite of me. Arising from a gesture, from my moods, from my passion. To my greatest pleasure. Some colours echo one another, while some shapes may incidentally suggest familiar images: here an eye, there a small boat, elsewhere a seed. I let them be. They speak. They don’t represent anything. Those shapes and colours invite us to set on a journey. A journey that lies inside of us and that unveils itself discreetly before our eyes. Cécile Buysse
