Claude DE GASPé ALLEYN

I was born in Quebec in 1946. Inspired by the culture of the region, some 20 years ago, I chose to move to the Sutton area where I participated in the annual Tour des Arts on several occasions. For the last 10 years my work has been presented exclusively by Montreal's Galerie Valentin. Although I have no formal artistic training in the academic sense, I was bitten by the creative bug early in my youth. Ultimately, I left a career in communications to devote myself entirely to painting. Late in the 1980's I succumbed to the contemporary art movement, then, in full swing. Despite the obvious delight awakened in me by working in the artistic style, I consciously decided to go in the opposite direction, choosing instead to use the figurative approach to represent the human adventures of ordinary people. In this way, my work speaks as loudly as possible about those episodes and events of daily life in North America. Many of my pieces are inspired by my life in and around the Brome Lake area.

From a technical stand point I soon abandoned the brush, choosing instead non-traditional painting tools which allowed me to better 'split' or divide colour: wooden shish-kabab skewers, sewing needles and even paint scraper blades. Using these tools in an unconventional manner has allowed me to create a pixelated high definition effect in my work, as well as defining my own unique and distinctive style.
